Design and Technology
About
Design and Technology prepares pupils to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing technologies. They learn to think and intervene creatively to improve quality of life. The subject calls for pupils to become autonomous and creative problem solvers, as individuals and members of a team. They must look for needs, wants and opportunities and respond to them by developing a range of ideas and making products and systems.
They combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social and environmental issues, functions and industrial practices. As they do so, they reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its use and effects. Through Design and Technology, all pupils can become discriminating and informed users of products, and become innovators.

Aerospace Enterprising Challenge - October 2011
- Student Charlie Jordan is one to keep an eye on after he masterminded a manufacturing business during a school challenge. Charlie headed a team on behalf of The Radclyffe School, in Chadderton, in the Make it in Aerospace Enterprising Challenge, at Dukinfield Town Hall.
- After fulfilling the brief to design a disaster zone resue vehicle, Charlie and his fellow students pitched their creation to a “Dragon’s Den” style panel of experts made up from senior managers from event sponsors The Hyde Group.
- Despite the team missing out on the top prize Charlie scooped an “outstanding individual” title and won a prize for being an excellent all-rounder and keeping his team motivated.
- The event was also a collaboration between The Manufacturing Institute’s Make It campaign and The North-West Aerospace Alliance’s Take Off in Aerospace programme.
